По площади УНЖЛАГ сопоставим с территорией таких стран, как Дания, Нидерланды, Бельгия и Швейцария. Она включала в себя северо-запад Нижегородской области и огромный кусок области Костромской. Чтобы добраться от «столицы» УНЖЛАГА, поселка Сухобезводного, до его северного отделения на станции Поеж, нужно было ехать на поезде всю ночь. Но узкоколейка уходила ещё дальше. Следы эти окончательно затерялись. Шпалы и рельсы поглотило ненасытное болото и тотальное бездорожье.
